Arrival in Kathmandu
KathmanduArrive at Kathmandu airport (1,345 m). Overnight at hotel.

Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) in the Langtang Valley, the closest major trek to Kathmandu. Tamang villages, bamboo forests, cheese factory, and optional Tserko Ri (4,984m) summit. No flights needed. 11 days, from USD 775.
The Langtang Valley is a glacial valley running east to west below the 7,227-meter wall of Langtang Lirung. The trail follows the Langtang Khola through dense forest before opening into alpine meadows above 3,000m. Kyanjin Gompa sits at the head of the valley in a flat yak pasture with the glacier-covered peaks closing in on three sides.
New Langtang village is a powerful experience. The community rebuilt their homes above the avalanche debris field, and the memorial to the 175 victims is maintained with prayer flags and mani stones. Trekkers pass through daily, supporting the economy that was devastated in 2015.
Tserko Ri (4,984m) is the optional summit that turns this easy trek into something memorable. The 1,100-meter climb from Kyanjin Gompa takes 3 to 4 hours. From the top, Shishapangma (8,027m) in Tibet dominates the northern skyline, a view available on almost no other trek in Nepal.
The Langtang Valley Trek is an 11-day route from Kathmandu to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) in the Langtang Valley, the closest major trekking destination to the capital. The trek starts from Syabrubesi (1,550m), a 7-hour drive from Kathmandu, and follows the Langtang Khola through bamboo forests, Tamang villages, and alpine meadows to the head of the valley below Langtang Lirung (7,227m).
Langtang village, destroyed by a massive avalanche during the 2015 earthquake, has been rebuilt as "New Langtang" just above the original site. A memorial marks the location where 175 people lost their lives. The trail passes through the memorial and continues to Kyanjin Gompa, where a cheese factory (established in 1955 with Swiss assistance) still produces yak cheese.
The optional climb of Tserko Ri (4,984m) from Kyanjin Gompa is a non-technical but demanding day hike gaining 1,100 meters. From the summit, you see Langtang Lirung, Gangchempo, Dorje Lakpa, Shishapangma (8,027m) in Tibet, and on clear days the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. Walking days average 5 to 6 hours on well-maintained trails.
Permits: Langtang National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000) and TIMS card, both included. Licensed guide mandatory.
To extend this trek with a sacred lake crossing, the Gosaikunda Pass Trek adds the Gosaikunda Lakes and Laurebina Pass in 17 days. For a cultural alternative in the same region, the Tamang Heritage Trek follows a quieter route through Tamang villages in 15 days. For the most challenging Langtang route, the Ganja La Pass Trek crosses a 5,122m pass into Helambu.
