Trip Highlights

The moments that matter most

Seven days across four valleys: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Phobjikha. The essential western Bhutan circuit covering every major dzong, the Tiger's Nest hike, Dochula Pass with 108 chortens and Himalayan panorama, and the peaceful Gangtey Nature Trail.

Punakha Dzong sits at the confluence of two rivers and is widely considered the most beautiful fortress-monastery in the country. Phobjikha Valley is a glacial bowl where endangered black-necked cranes winter from October through February. The Gangtey Nature Trail is one of the quietest walks in Bhutan.

Bhutan's SDF was cut from $200 to $100/night in 2023 and stays there until August 2027. For a 7-day trip, that saves $700 per person. Mountain Hawk Trek handles visa, SDF, flights, guide, meals, and all entry fees from Kathmandu.

Trip Overview

A closer look

Bhutan does not do mass tourism. Every visitor enters on a regulated visa, travels with a licensed guide, and contributes a daily Sustainable Development Fee that funds free healthcare, free education, and forest conservation. The result is a country where 72% of the land is still under forest cover, the air is clean, and the monasteries are not overrun.

This 7-day tour covers the four essential regions of western Bhutan: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and the Phobjikha Valley. You visit the major dzongs, walk through traditional villages, cross a mountain pass at 3,050m with views of the eastern Himalayas, and hike to the Tiger's Nest, the cliff-side monastery that has become the defining image of Bhutan.

The itinerary is designed for travelers of all ages and fitness levels. The only physically demanding section is the Tiger's Nest hike on Day 6 (4 to 5 hours round trip, 600m elevation gain), and even that can be done by pony for the first half.

Mountain Hawk Trek arranges the full package from Kathmandu: Bhutan visa processing, Paro flights, accommodation, meals, transport, guide, and all entry fees. You show up at Kathmandu airport. We handle the rest.

Short on time? Our 4-Day Short Bhutan Tour covers Paro and Thimphu with Tiger's Nest in just four days. Want to go deeper? The 10-Day Complete Western Bhutan Tour adds Haa Valley, Chelela Pass, and Kila Nunnery to this itinerary.
