Rara National Park, established in 1976, is Nepal’s smallest and most scenic national park. The park covers an area of 106 square kilometers and sits about 370 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu in Mugu, a mountainous district in the western region of Nepal. More than 500 different kinds of flowers and herbs are found here, including rhododendrons, black juniper, oak, West Himalayan spruce, and Himalayan cypress. The park is home to 20 different species of mammals and 214 species of birds.
The national park is centered around Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal. Rara Lake is five kilometers long and two kilometers wide, spreading over 10.8 square kilometers. The trek to Rara offers magnificent views of the deep blue lake, heavily forested hillsides, and the snow-capped peaks surrounding it. The clear, high-altitude waters of Rara mirror the snow-capped Himalayas, which are ringed by pine, spruce, and juniper forest.
If you are looking for wilderness and solitude and do not mind the initial travel, this trek is an ideal choice. Below is a suggested 16-day itinerary. Longer routes from Jumla to Simikot via Rara Lake can be arranged on request.
