Treks inEastern Nepal
The wild, remote eastern Himalayas. Two of the five highest peaks on Earth, pristine forests, and trails where you may not see another trekker for days.
Where few
dare to walk
The wild, remote eastern Himalayas. Two of the five highest peaks on Earth, pristine forests, and trails where you may not see another foreigner for days.
Located towards the eastern and far eastern regions of Nepal, Makalu and Kanchenjunga follow some of the most spectacular trails in the entire Himalayas. Both regions are perfect for those drawn to deep culture, unsurpassed beauty, and biological diversity, and the rare privilege of trails unshared with crowds. Jaw-dropping mountain scenery, the chance to spot rare wildlife, and quality time in super-friendly teahouses are what set these journeys apart.
The third highest peak in the world, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), and the fifth highest, Mt. Makalu (8,485m), combine to make this a paradise for trekking off the beaten path. An outgoing mix of Sherpa and Rai communities reside in the valleys, and charming forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron welcome every visitor. The terrain ranges from sparkling, mica-flecked river valleys to glacial moraines beneath towering ice walls.
Kanchenjunga Trek Routes
The Kanchenjunga region splits into three distinctive trekking corridors:
- The trails leading north-south and east-west through the regional hub of Taplejung.
- The north face route to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
- The valleys beneath the ridges around Yalung.
Most trekkers arrive to Taplejung by road via Ilam, though those trekking to Phalut on the Indian border begin from the jeep road head at Chyangthapu.
Getting to Makalu
Most trekkers begin from Tumlingtar and drive along a ridge-top dirt road to Num before crossing the Arun River. The next few days are tiring as you climb up and over the Khongma Danda, but the views and forests decorated with orchids are worth every step. You then join the sparsely populated Barun Nadi valley all the way to Makalu Base Camp.
Alternative Routes
For those who prefer to avoid high-altitude passes, multiple trails from Tumlingtar and Khadbari connect to Chyamtang, Lukla, and Taplejung through the Makalu Buffer Zone. These routes offer:
- Cultural village-to-village homestays through the buffer zone.
- Remote wilderness walking, almost certainly without meeting another group.
- Connections between Makalu and Kanchenjunga regions for extended traverses.
Mountain Hawk Trek handles all restricted-area permits, logistics, and provides guides with deep knowledge of the eastern Himalayan trails.
