They know this trail by altitude, not by map. From the moment you land at Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu, you are never alone. The mountain has been waiting longer than either of you.
Six questions we hear most from first-time trekkers.
October and November are the most popular months. The monsoon ends in late September, skies clear out, and temperatures sit comfortably up to about 4,000m. March through May is the second window, with warmer days and rhododendron forests in bloom below treeline. Both windows work for Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, and Langtang. Upper Mustang and Dolpo sit in the rain shadow and can be trekked through the monsoon months from June to August.
A guided 14-day Everest Base Camp trek runs $1,500 to $2,800 per person depending on group size, accommodation grade, and whether you fly to Lukla or drive to Jiri. Shorter treks like Poon Hill and Mardi Himal start around $600 to $900. Most packages include permits, a certified guide, porter, accommodation, and meals on the trail. International flights, Kathmandu hotels, travel insurance, and personal gear are separate.
Yes. Since April 2023, Nepal requires all foreign trekkers to hire a licensed guide. Solo trekking without a guide is no longer permitted in any national park or conservation area. This applies to Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, and every other regulated trekking region. The rule covers individual trekkers and groups alike.
You do not need mountaineering experience. You do need solid cardiovascular fitness. Most people prepare for three to four months with regular hiking under a loaded pack, running or cycling, and stair climbing. The trek involves six to seven hours of walking per day at altitudes up to 5,364m. The main challenge is altitude, not technical difficulty. Built-in acclimatisation days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche give your body time to adjust.
Nepal's main trekking routes have been walked by hundreds of thousands of people over several decades. The primary risks are altitude sickness and weather, both manageable with a certified guide, proper acclimatisation scheduling, and flexible itineraries. Teahouses along the Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang routes provide shelter and meals every few hours. Kathmandu has international-standard hospitals, and helicopter evacuation is available from most trekking regions.
Most treks require two permits: a TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System) and a conservation area or national park entry permit. Restricted areas like Manaslu, Upper Dolpo, Upper Mustang, and Kanchenjunga need an additional restricted area permit, which requires booking through a licensed trekking agency. Peak climbs (Island Peak, Mera Peak, Lobuche East) need a separate NMA climbing permit. Your trekking company handles all the paperwork before departure.

Nepal's trekking trails run through some of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. Glacial rivers feed rice paddies two thousand metres below. Rhododendron forests shelter red pandas and Himalayan monals. The teahouses you sleep in are family homes.
Sustainable trekking in Nepal is not a marketing line for us. It is how Prem has run expeditions since 2009. Every eco-friendly trekking practice we follow comes from years of walking these trails and watching what works: local employment, Leave No Trace discipline, fair wages, conservation area permit fees that actually reach the communities they are meant to protect.
Responsible tourism in the Himalayas means the mountains and the people who live on them are better off after you visit, not worse. That is the only standard we measure ourselves against.
Zero-waste trails
Every expedition packs out what it packs in. No single-use plastics on any Mountain Hawk trek since 2019. Our guides carry reusable filter bottles and mesh bags for trail waste.
Fair porter wages
Porters earn above IPPG recommended rates, carry a maximum of 25 kg, and receive proper gear, insurance, and rest days written into every contract.
Local economy first
Nepali guides, teahouse stays, locally sourced meals. Over 90% of your trip spend stays in the communities you walk through, from Lukla to Lo Manthang.
Conservation funding
Your ACAP, Sagarmatha, and Langtang permit fees fund trail maintenance, reforestation, and wildlife protection. We handle every permit so not a rupee gets lost.
