Kanchenjunga Trek Route Options:

The Kanchenjunga region is split into three distinctive trekking regions:

  • The trails that lead north-south and east-west through the regional hub of Taplejung
  • The north face to Kanchenjunga Base Camp.
  • The valleys that lies beneath the ridges around Yalung

Getting to Kanchenjunga

Most trekkers arrive to Kanchenjunga Region (Taplejung) by road (via Ilam). However if you are trekking to Phalut, on the border with India, your trek will begin from the jeep road head at Chyangthapu (Phunlading).

Getting to Makalu

Most trekkers love to begin their adventure from Tumlingtar and then drive along a ridge top dirt road to Num before crossing Arun River. The next few days are tiring as you climb up and over the Khongma Danda, but the views and the forests decorated with orchids is worth every penny you spent. You then join the sparsely populated Barun Nadi valley to Makalu Base Camp.

For those who don’t prefer high altitude passes, there are multiple trails from Tmulingtar and Khadbari that connects to Chyamtang, Lukla, and Taplejung passing through the Makalu Buffer Zone, comprising of cultural based village to village homestays and remote wilderness route option, almost certainly without meeting the crowd of trekkers.
