About the Region

Where diversity
defines the trail

Nepal's most visited trekking destination, and for good reason. No other region packs such extreme diversity into a single massif: subtropical jungle, alpine meadow, arid rain-shadow desert, and 8,000m ice wall, all within a few days' walk.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek follows the Modi Khola gorge through rhododendron forests and Gurung villages to the foot of Annapurna I (8,091m), the world's tenth highest peak. The full approach from Nayapul takes 7 to 10 days, gaining about 2,700m of elevation. For a shorter commitment, the 4-day Mardi Himal Trek splits off at the same trailhead and reaches 4,500m along a narrow ridgeline with unobstructed views of Machapuchare's south face.

The Annapurna Circuit is a 12 to 18 day loop around the entire massif, crossing the 5,416m Thorong La Pass and dropping into the rain-shadow Mustang valley on the north side. Road construction has eaten into parts of the southern approach (the Marsyangdi valley between Besisahar and Chame is now partly motorable), but the northern half above Manang remains untouched. Mountain Hawk's itinerary starts with a jeep to Chamje, skipping the worst road section and saving two walking days.

Shorter options include the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (4 to 5 days, sunrise views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South from 3,210m) and the Khopra Danda ridge trek (5 to 6 days, views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and the sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660m). For experienced trekkers, the Nar Phu Valley is a restricted-area detour through a Tibetan Buddhist enclave, and the Dhaulagiri Circuit crosses a remote 5,360m pass with glacier travel.

Trekking permits for the Annapurna region include the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and a TIMS card. The Nar Phu Valley requires an additional restricted-area permit ($100 per week). Mountain Hawk Trek operates all Annapurna routes with guides from Kaski, Myagdi, and Manang districts, handles all permits, and runs logistics from both Kathmandu and Pokhara.

The region is accessible from Pokhara, a 25-minute flight or 7-hour drive from Kathmandu. Trailheads at Nayapul (ABC, Mardi, Poon Hill), Besisahar (Annapurna Circuit), and Beni (Dhaulagiri) are all within 2 hours of Pokhara by road.
