Trip Overview

A closer look

Panch Pokhari is a camping trek through untouched traditional villages and spectacular Himalayan landscapes. It is an ultimate trekking experience along an off-the-beaten-path route through untouched wilderness and unspoilt settlements in the mountains of Nepal. This trek to Panch Pokhari at the base of Jugal Himal offers pristine mountain views, rich culture, and genuine adventure. The spectacular region combines rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty, and biological diversity as you trek to a group of high-altitude holy lakes sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus.

The Panch Pokhari trek begins from Kathmandu with a five-hour scenic drive to Chautara, the district headquarters of Sindhupalchowk, northeast of Kathmandu. This area offers a combination of rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty, and biological diversity as you trek to a group of high-altitude holy lakes. Along the way, you experience the indigenous lifestyles and traditions of village communities, particularly the Sherpa and Tamang people, and are briefed on trekking technicalities, altitude sickness, and the highlights of the trek. These include the holy Five Lakes, the Himalayan scenery, and the lifestyle of nomadic people unchanged by time. The unusual climatic and geographic mix makes this area a naturalist’s dream and a haven for those who appreciate traditional cultures. The trek starts at 1,450 m and goes up to 4,100 m at Panch Pokhari, a secluded pilgrimage site where the Janai Purnima festival is held in August. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit this site each year. The top of Panch Pokhari (4,100 m) offers excellent views of the Jugal Himal, Rolwaling range, Gosaikunda, Kanchenjunga, and Makalu.

This excellent trek can be attempted by any individual with a moderate level of fitness. It can be undertaken at most times of the year except during the monsoon season, and it can also be combined with a rafting trip. Experience a genuine adventure to unspoilt settlements and high-altitude holy lakes.
