Trip Highlights

The moments that matter most

The five Panch Pokhari lakes sit in a glacial basin at 4,100m, surrounded by moraine and alpine grass. The lakes are sacred: pilgrims visit during the annual Janai Purnima festival, walking for days from the lowlands. Stone shrines and prayer flags mark each lake.

The approach through Tamang villages in Sindhupalchok is rural Nepal at its most authentic. Terraced rice paddies, stone houses, and monastery schools line the trail. Very few foreign trekkers pass through these villages.

Above the treeline, the landscape opens into yak pastures with views of the Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa (6,966m). The isolation is complete: no teahouses, no other trekkers, and the sound of wind across alpine grass.

Trip Overview

A closer look

The Panch Pokhari Trek is a 17-day camping route to the five sacred lakes of Panch Pokhari at 4,100 meters in the eastern Langtang region. The trail passes through Tamang farming villages, dense forest, and alpine meadows before reaching the lake basin, a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. This is one of the least-visited trekking routes accessible from Kathmandu.

The route approaches from the south through Sindhupalchok district, climbing gradually through terraced farmland and forest. Above the treeline, yak pastures and alpine meadows lead to the five lakes sitting in a glacial basin below the Jugal Himal range. The lakes are fed by glacial meltwater and surrounded by prayer flags and stone shrines.

Permits: Langtang National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000) and TIMS card, both included. This is a camping trek with tents, cooking crew, and porter team provided.

For a teahouse alternative in the Langtang region, the Langtang Valley Trek reaches Kyanjin Gompa in 11 days (Easy, USD 775). For a longer trek combining Langtang with sacred lakes, the Gosaikunda Pass Trek visits the Gosaikunda lake system in 17 days.
