About the Region

The valley
of glaciers

The closest high-mountain experience to Kathmandu. No flights needed. Just a drive into a world of Tamang heritage, sacred lakes, and 7,000m peaks rising above rhododendron forests.

The Langtang Valley Trek follows the Langtang Khola upstream through bamboo and rhododendron forests, past yak pastures at Lama Hotel and Ghoda Tabela, to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m. From Kyanjin, day hikes to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) and Tserko Ri (5,033m) give views of Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Shishapangma (8,027m, in Tibet), and Gaurishankar. The valley trek takes 7 to 9 days round trip from Kathmandu.

The 2015 earthquake triggered a massive landslide that buried the original Langtang village, killing 310 people including 175 Tamang residents and 49 foreign trekkers. The community rebuilt from scratch, carrying cement and tin by hand over days because no road existed. Today over 50 teahouses operate in the rebuilt valley, and a memorial with 243 names stands at the site of the original village. The Langtang Reconstruction Memorial Center, led by surviving Tamang families, runs the rebuilding effort independently.

Beyond the main valley, the region has several other routes. The Gosaikunda Trek climbs to a chain of sacred alpine lakes at 4,380m, a Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site that draws thousands during the Janai Purnima festival in August. The Tamang Heritage Trek follows the Bhote Koshi valley through ancient Tamang villages (Gatlang, Tatopani, Thuman, Brimdang) with hot springs and views of the Ganesh Himal range. The Helambu Trek offers a gentler 5 to 7 day loop through rhododendron ridges accessible from the Kathmandu Valley rim.

For experienced trekkers, the Ganjala Pass (5,122m) is a technical crossing connecting the Langtang Valley to Helambu. It requires crampons, a rope, and good weather, but the traverse is one of Nepal's most satisfying multi-day crossings. Yala Peak (5,500m) near Kyanjin Gompa is a non-technical trekking peak with panoramic views.

The region is reached by a 7 to 8 hour drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,503m), the main trailhead. No flights needed. Langtang National Park entry is NPR 3,000 for foreigners, plus a TIMS card. Mountain Hawk Trek provides locally born guides from Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts who grew up in the valley.
