Fifteen Days on the Trail to Everest Base Camp

The trail runs from a hotel bed in Kathmandu to a cairn at 5,545 metres and back to the same bed fifteen days later. Everything in between is what your lungs, your knees, and your patience think is normal by the time you get there.

Sixteen Days Around the Mountain

This is the walk from the rice terraces above Besisahar to 5,416 metres at Thorong La, then back down through the Kali Gandaki gorge to Pokhara. Prem knows exactly which morning at Thorong Phedi to leave early, and which one to wait out.

Thirteen Days to the Annapurna Sanctuary

The trail into Annapurna Base Camp does not rise in a straight line. It climbs to 2,800 metres at Ghorepani, drops back to 2,117 at Chhomrong, climbs again to 2,800 at Himalaya, then pushes on to 4,130. Prem still walks people through that shape before they ever leave Kathmandu, because the map alone does not explain it.
