Trip Highlights

The moments that matter most

Day 1 is a Shivapuri National Park hike from the Sundarijal gate to Chisapani. The forest does not break for hours, and the park is an important water catchment for the valley. Mulkharka, the lunch village, is the one place on the climb where you can look back and see how much of the valley you have left below you.

Chisapani is a ridge village at about 2,150 m, and the reason to sleep there is the morning. On a clear day the Langtang range stands across the north, with Langtang Lirung the peak you will pick out first. The lodge gives you a private room, dinner, and a walk to the viewpoint before breakfast.

Chisapani Nagarkot trekking is mostly Day 2: more than 20 km of ridge, forest, terraced fields and villages, with a last climb into Nagarkot. You arrive on foot at a hill town that most visitors reach by road, and it changes how the place feels.

Read our best time to trek in Nepal guide for the wider season picture. For this hike a daypack is enough: a down jacket, a rain shell, 2 litres of water and snacks, and our Nepal trek packing list shows what to trim for a two-day trip.

Trip Overview

A closer look

The Chisapani Nagarkot hike is a 2-day, one-night crossing of the northern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. You start at Sundarijal, about 15 km from the city, climb through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to the lodge village of Chisapani at about 2,150 m, and the next day follow the ridge to Nagarkot at about 2,175 m. Operators call it the Chisapani Nagarkot trek. We call it a hike: the ground is never technical, altitude sickness is rare at this height, and you sleep in a lodge with a door. Day 1 is 5 to 6 hours on foot and Day 2 is 6 to 7 hours over more than 20 km. Park entry, a licensed guide, the lodge, the meals on the route and private transport both ways are in the price.

Day 1 is the Sundarijal Chisapani trek, and it is the steeper day. We drive out from your Kathmandu hotel in 45 minutes to 1 hour, our guide buys your park ticket at the gate, and the Chisapani hike begins up a forest trail with stone steps in places and tangerine cloth ribbons tied to branches for markers. Lunch is at Mulkharka, a Tamang village where the valley opens out behind you. After lunch the trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forest to the ridge at Borlang Bhanjyang and drops to Chisapani. The distance is 10 to 12 km. You reach the lodge in the mid-afternoon, in time for tea and the evening light on the Langtang side.

Day 2 is the longer one, and it is the day we like better. The long Day 1 haul is behind you. From Chisapani the route runs through forest to a small lake, Nagamati Dhaap, then on to Jhule, where we stop for lunch (at Chauki Bhanjyang on some days, depending on pace). The afternoon rolls through terraced fields and villages, with tea at Kattike Bhanjyang and a last climb into Nagarkot. At Jarsing Pauwa, a village with a school and a bus stand, the track leaves the road. You finish at Nagarkot in the late afternoon and our vehicle drives you back to Kathmandu in 1.5 to 2 hours. Operators who sell a Chisapani Nagarkot trek 3 days long add the Nagarkot sunrise and the walk down to Changunarayan; that morning is the second day of our Nagarkot Hiking package, and we keep it there.

Day 1 runs inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Foreign visitors must walk with a nature guide, so ours is with you from the gate. The park entry is NPR 1,000 per person per entry and it is included. If two days is more hiking than you want, Nagarjun Hill Day Hiking climbs to Jamacho (2,128 m) in the same park in 3 to 4 hours, and the Day Hiking hub lists every short hike we run from Kathmandu.

We run it in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Autumn gives the clearest mornings. In the monsoon the view closes and leeches come out on the forest trail, and in December to February the Chisapani lodge is cold enough that you will want a down jacket at dinner. Chisapani fills on weekends, so we book the lodge ahead and keep midweek dates where we can.

Good to Know

Before you commit

The Chisapani Nagarkot trek cost at Mountain Hawk Trek runs USD 195 to 275 per person depending on group size. Everything on the route is in that price: the park entry, the guide who has to walk with you inside the park, one lodge night, the meals, and the vehicle at both ends. The 2-day crossing lands between our one-day hikes (Nagarjun Hill at USD 85, Phulchowki at USD 120) and the Nagarkot Hiking overnight (USD 220), because it is a harder second day with a cheaper bed. Other operators sell a similar crossing from USD 99 to 295 per person, so check what each price includes before you compare. Your own spending on the route is small: tea, a bottled drink, and the tip for your guide and driver.

The Reward

Why you'll love it

Three reasons this trek stays with you long after the plane home.

Scenery

The route earns the second day. Most Kathmandu hikes end the same afternoon they start, and you carry the city home with you. Here you sleep on a ridge, wake above the valley, and spend a full day moving along the rim under your own power. It is the nearest thing to a short trek that fits a weekend.

Thrill

We tell you what is certain and what is not. Operators print Chisapani at anywhere from 2,140 to 2,300 m and Day 2 at anything from 15 to 26 km. We print about 2,150 m, more than 20 km, and the hours a guided group actually needs: 5 to 6 on Day 1 and 6 to 7 on Day 2. Nobody should plan a day around a number that two pages cannot agree on.

Connection

The price covers the things that usually turn up later. The park ticket is in it, and so is the guide that foreign visitors must walk with inside the park. So are the lodge, the meals and the transfers in both directions.

Honest Check

Is this trek for you?

A few things worth knowing before you commit. No sugar-coating, no surprises on day one.

Expectations

Before you book

6

You want a short trek's feel in two days. You sleep on a ridge above the valley, walk 5 to 6 hours on Day 1 and 6 to 7 hours on Day 2, and are back in Kathmandu on the second evening.

You are an active beginner. You do not need trekking experience, but you should be comfortable walking 6 hours on consecutive days. Day 2 is longer than Day 1 and ends with a climb.

You prefer forest and village trails to a summit. The route holds no peak and no viewpoint you have to hurry for. The reward is the ridge itself.

You want the Nagarkot sunrise as well. This hike ends at Nagarkot in the late afternoon, so the sunrise is not part of it. Our Nagarkot Hiking package is built around the morning.

You are travelling in a group of two to twelve, or alone. Solo bookings are fine and run with our guide and driver. The minimum age is 12.

You are a day hiker looking for the next step up. Nagarjun Hill (3 to 4 hours) and Phulchowki (a full day) are shorter; this is the one with a night in a lodge.

Gear Up

What to pack

The full kit that's built from years on the trail. Skip it at your own risk, bring it and you'll never think about it again.

Equipment

Packing checklist

10 items

Daypack of 20 to 30 litres (the guide carries nothing of yours; a porter is optional)

Walking shoes or light boots with ankle support and a good grip for stone steps and wet forest

Down jacket (essential in December to February, and cold on clear spring evenings at Chisapani)

Rain shell, jacket and pants, in the monsoon shoulder weeks

Warm hat and light gloves for the morning at Chisapani

Refillable water bottle of 2 litres capacity; fill at Mulkharka and at the lodge

Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen

Cash in Nepali rupees, NPR 3,000 to 5,000, for tea, extras and tips

Small power bank; charging at the lodge may cost extra

Leech socks or salt in the monsoon

You need a daypack, not a trekking bag. Leave the rest of your luggage at your Kathmandu hotel, because you sleep out only once. The two things people underpack are warmth and water: a down jacket matters at dinner and breakfast at Chisapani, and a 2-litre bottle saves a stop on Day 2.
