About the Region

The roof
of the world

The Everest region is a land of unparalleled beauty and adventure nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. From its pristine wilderness to its vibrant culture, this is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored.

At the heart of this majestic landscape lies Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning over 1,100 square kilometres of protected wilderness. Within its borders roam Musk deer, Red panda, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Black bear, snow leopard, Himalayan Monal (Danphe), Mountain Hawk, and Himalayan Griffon. The valleys are carpeted with lush rhododendron forests, towering alpine trees, and bamboo groves teeming with life.

What truly sets the Everest region apart is its blend of natural grandeur and living culture. This is the homeland of the legendary Sherpa people, whose indomitable spirit and warm hospitality have welcomed travellers for centuries. Villages like Namche, Thame, Khumjung, Phortse, Pangboche, and Dingboche offer glimpses into traditional life, while ancient monasteries at Tengboche and Pangboche stand as testament to the region's spiritual heritage.

The Peaks

Three of the world's highest mountains rise here:

  • Everest (8,848m) - the supreme peak, drawing mountaineers and trekkers from around the world.
  • Lhotse (8,516m) - the world's fourth highest, its massive south face dominating the Khumbu skyline.
  • Cho Oyu (8,201m) - the most accessible 8,000m peak, visible from Gokyo Ri.

Other prominent peaks like Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and Nuptse complete an awe-inspiring panorama at every turn.

Trekking Routes

  • Everest Base Camp Trek is the classic 14-day journey through the Khumbu to the foot of the world's highest peak.
  • Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek visits the stunning turquoise Gokyo Lakes and crosses a high glacial pass.
  • Everest Three Passes Trek crosses Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La in a single epic circuit.
  • Kala Patthar (5,545m) and Gokyo Ri (5,360m) offer the most iconic panoramic viewpoints of the highest peaks.

Glaciers & High Passes

The region's vast glaciers like the Khumbu and Ngozumpa provide a dramatic landscape of ice and moraine. Formidable mountain passes test the experienced trekker:

  • Renjo La (5,360m)
  • Cho La (5,420m)
  • Kongma La (5,535m)

Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a first-time trekker, the Everest region beckons with endless possibilities for exploration and discovery.
