About the Region

The roof
of the world

The Everest region is a land of unparalleled beauty and adventure nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. From its pristine wilderness to its vibrant culture, this is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is the region's most popular route, a 12 to 14 day walk from Lukla (2,860m) to EBC at 5,364m. The trail passes through Namche Bazaar (the commercial hub of Khumbu at 3,440m), the Tengboche monastery, and the high-altitude settlements of Dingboche and Gorak Shep before reaching base camp on the Khumbu Glacier. Most itineraries include a sunrise climb to Kala Patthar (5,545m) for a direct view of Everest's summit pyramid.

The Khumbu is the homeland of the Sherpa people, whose villages are scattered across the valley between 3,000m and 5,000m. Namche, Thame, Khumjung, Phortse, Pangboche, and Dingboche are all functioning Sherpa communities, not tourist constructions. The Tengboche and Pangboche monasteries are among the oldest in the Khumbu, and the Mani Rimdu festival in November draws pilgrims and visitors from across Nepal.

Beyond the standard EBC route, the region has several alternatives. The Gokyo Valley Trek visits five glacial lakes below Cho Oyu, with a climb to the Gokyo Ri viewpoint (5,357m) for a panorama that many trekkers prefer to Kala Patthar. The Three Passes Trek (Renjo La 5,360m, Cho La 5,420m, Kongma La 5,535m) is a demanding 18 to 20 day circuit connecting Gokyo and the EBC route. The Jiri to EBC route follows the original 1953 Hillary expedition approach, adding 7 days of lower-altitude walking through Rai and Sherpa villages before reaching Lukla.

For peak climbing, Island Peak (6,189m) and Lobuche East (6,119m) are the two most accessible NMA-classified trekking peaks, both reachable as 2-day extensions from the EBC trail. The Khumbu also contains the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest in the Himalayas at 36 kilometres.

The region is reached by a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport, one of the world's most dramatic runway approaches. Mountain Hawk Trek coordinates all flights, Sagarmatha National Park permits, and TIMS cards. Our guides are from the Solukhumbu district and lead treks in the Khumbu year-round.
