Trip Highlights

The moments that matter most

Phulchowki's 360-degree summit view is the most complete Himalayan panorama available from inside the Kathmandu Valley. On clear mornings, peaks from Annapurna to Everest span the northern horizon.

The rhododendron forest between 2,000m and 2,600m blooms in bands of red, pink, and white from March to May. The forest floor is carpeted with fallen petals. This is the best rhododendron walk near Kathmandu.

Over 500 bird species have been recorded on Phulchowki, including rare Himalayan species. The forest is a magnet for birdwatchers from around the world.

Trip Overview

A closer look

The Phulchowki Day Hike is a full-day climb to Phulchowki (2,795m), the highest peak of the Kathmandu Valley. The trail starts from Godawari Botanical Garden on the southern edge of the valley and climbs through one of the densest rhododendron forests near Kathmandu. From the summit, the view spans 360 degrees: Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Manaslu to the north, Everest and Makalu to the east, and the Annapurna range to the west.

The hike takes 5 to 7 hours round trip, gaining approximately 1,200 meters from Godawari. The trail passes through mixed forest with over 500 recorded bird species, making Phulchowki one of the top birding locations in the Kathmandu Valley. The summit has a small shrine and a communications tower.

Guide included. No special permits needed beyond the botanical garden entry.

For a shorter half-day option, Nagarjun Hill Day Hiking reaches 2,128m in 3 to 4 hours (USD 85). For an overnight hike with sunrise, Nagarkot Hiking reaches 2,170m with Everest views (2 days, USD 220).
