Trail conditions in January
The forest between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel is the easiest part of a January trek. It sits low, it holds the sun, and it is dry. Above Ghodatabela the valley opens and the wind picks up, and the exposed stretch toward Langtang village is where January is felt.
Snow above 3,000m is normal but rarely deep enough to stop anyone on the main trail. The section that matters is the optional high ground. Tserko Ri at 4,985m in January is a serious cold outing rather than a pleasant acclimatisation walk, and on many January days the sensible call is the lower Kyanjin Ri viewpoints at 4,400m or 4,700m instead.
Underfoot the route is frozen and firm, which makes for fast walking. Microspikes are worth carrying for the shaded sections between Lama Hotel and Ghodatabela, where ice sits on the path for weeks.
