Is March a good time for the Langtang Valley trek?

Yes. March gives rhododendron in the lower forest, rapidly improving conditions up high and a trail that is still quiet. Kyanjin Gompa remains cold at night throughout the month.

When do rhododendrons bloom in Langtang?

Through March in the forest between Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel, which sits lower than the Annapurna rhododendron belt and therefore flowers a little earlier. Mid-March is usually reliable.

Can you hike Tserko Ri in March?

By the second half of the month, usually yes. Early March often still carries enough snow to make it slow, and the Kyanjin Ri viewpoints at 4,400m and 4,700m are the fallback.

What happened to Langtang village?

It was destroyed by an avalanche of rock and ice off Langtang Lirung during the earthquake of 25 April 2015, with very heavy loss of life among residents and trekkers. The village has been rebuilt slightly apart from the original site, and the teahouses there today are run by families who returned.

March settles into the spring pattern: clear mornings, cloud building in the valley through the afternoon, and frequent clearing at dusk. Rain and snow fall on four or five days. The month warms quickly, and the gap between the first week and the last is wide enough that early March walks like February at Kyanjin while late March walks like a different season entirely.

The forest below Lama Hotel is the reason to come in March. Rhododendron flowers through this section from the middle of the month, and because the trail climbs steeply through it you pass through several elevations of bloom in a single morning. It is a smaller display than the Annapurna forests and it comes with almost nobody else on the path.

Above Ghodatabela the snowline lifts through the month. By late March the walk to Kyanjin Gompa is usually bare trail with icy patches, and Tserko Ri becomes a realistic rest-day objective again rather than the winter undertaking it is in February.

Langtang village sits on the valley floor between Ghodatabela and Kyanjin, rebuilt after the 2015 avalanche on ground slightly apart from the original site. Walking through it is a quiet part of the day. The mani walls and the memorial are there for anyone who wants to stop, and the lodges are run by families who came back.

Traffic builds gently and stays modest by Nepali trekking standards. Every lodge on the route has reopened by mid-March and the full range of Kyanjin accommodation is running again. You will meet other parties daily without ever queuing for anything.

Flights, roads and logistics

The road is dry and in reasonable condition, and demand for vehicles climbs through the month as the season starts. Eight hours from Kathmandu, with the national park permit checked at Dhunche on the way. Booking a day or two ahead is sensible from mid-March.
