Annapurna Circuit, the year at a glance

March is when the Annapurna Circuit becomes a normal trek again. Thorong La sheds enough snow through the month to move from a winter undertaking to a straightforward high crossing, temperatures climb at every elevation, and the rhododendron forest on the Ghorepani side flowers at the end of the route. Early March still walks like February up high.

The gap between the first and last week of March is wider on this circuit than on any other trek in this set, because the pass changes so much. Early March crossings need winter equipment and a weather window; late March crossings are usually a cold but ordinary morning. Afternoon cloud starts building over the eastern valleys from mid-month, while Manang and the Mustang side stay clear far longer thanks to the rain shadow.

On the trail

Trail conditions in March

The Marsyangdi side greens up and the walking is excellent. The Ghyaru and Ngawal high route, which is the best day on the eastern half, is clear of snow by mid-March and gives the sustained wall of Annapurna II, III, IV and Gangapurna across the valley.

On the pass, the change through the month is the story. Snow retreats off the ramp above High Camp, the traverse above the Jarsang Khola becomes walkable ground again rather than a snow crossing, and the descent to Muktinath goes back to being scree rather than snow-covered scree. By the last week most groups cross without spikes.

The far end of the circuit gets its own March event. The climb from Tatopani up through Sikha and Chitre to Ghorepani passes through rhododendron forest that flowers red and pink from about the third week, which means a late March circuit finishes on the same forest that people book an entire separate trek to see.

Crowds & teahouses

Who else is up there

Numbers build steadily and stay comfortable. Everything reopens through the first half of the month, including the higher lodges, and by mid-March the full route is operating normally. Manang comes back to life, with the bakeries open and the Himalayan Rescue Association post staffed for the season.

Getting in & out

Flights, roads and logistics

Roads are dry and reliable, and vehicle demand rises through the month as the spring season starts. The Besisahar drive and Dharapani jeep are straightforward. Booking a day or two ahead is sensible from mid-March onward.
