The bloom starts in late March in the forests between Phakding and Tengboche, then climbs the hillsides through April. If flowering forest is a priority, the last week of March through mid-April is the window on the Everest route; the deepest reds sit below 3,500m.

How cold is March at Everest Base Camp?

Gorak Shep, the highest sleeping point, sees daytime temperatures of roughly 0 to 5°C and nights of -15 to -10°C in March, warming across the month. Wind chill on Kala Patthar before dawn still feels like deep winter, so the down parka stays essential all month.

Will I see Everest expeditions in March?

Do I need to book teahouses in March?

March is a month of fast transition. The first week can still feel like February, with hard frosts and the odd late-winter snowfall; the last week is unmistakably spring, with afternoon warmth reaching the high valleys. Mornings stay reliably clear for mountain views, while afternoon cloud starts to build over the ridgelines as the month progresses, an early preview of the pre-monsoon pattern. Snowfall arrives as brief spring storms that typically clear overnight.

Underfoot, March is a mix: residual winter ice in the shaded stretches early in the month, then progressively drier, faster trail as the sun gains strength. The famous rhododendron bloom begins low, around Phakding and the forests toward Tengboche, and climbs the hillsides week by week. By late March the walk from Namche to Tengboche runs through the start of full flower.

The Khumbu also wakes up around you. Yak trains haul expedition loads toward Base Camp, lodge owners repaint signboards, and the trail gains the purposeful energy that defines spring in the valley. Base Camp itself begins its transformation from empty glacier to tented city, which makes the destination feel alive in a way autumn trekkers never see.

Expect the Lukla operation to shift from Kathmandu to Ramechhap during March as spring volume arrives, which adds a 4 to 5 hour pre-dawn drive to Manthali on flight day. Standard advice applies: fly early in the day, keep a buffer day each side, and reconfirm the departure airport a week out.
