Everest Base Camp Trek in April

This is the Khumbu at maximum theatre. The rhododendron bloom peaks along the Phakding to Tengboche forests, expedition yak trains share every stage of the trail, and the final walk across the moraine ends in a functioning canvas city of several hundred tents, prayer flags and puja ceremonies. The Khumbu Icefall, silent in autumn, glitters with ladder teams at first light.

The trail is dry, fast and in its best condition of the year. Winter ice is gone from all but the highest shaded corners, and the only physical nuisances are dust and traffic: on the narrow blasted section between Namche and Tengboche, yak convoys set the pace, and patience beats squeezing past on the exposed side.

Start walking early. The reliable morning window means groups that leave at 7am enjoy summit views all morning and reach the next lodge before the afternoon build-up; groups that linger walk their final hour under grey.

April runs at capacity. Every lodge on the standard route fills nightly through the middle weeks, and the pinch points are exactly where beds are fewest: Lobuche and Gorak Shep. Booked-through itineraries walk on schedule; improvised ones spend afternoons phoning ahead or accepting dining-room floor space at the top. Book the full route before you fly, and treat a confirmed Gorak Shep bed as the itinerary anchor.

The compensation for the density is the company. April dining rooms mix trekkers with climbers heading for Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse, and evenings at Dingboche and Lobuche carry a summit-season energy no other month reproduces.

All Lukla flights operate from Ramechhap in April, which means a roughly 4 to 5 hour drive from Kathmandu the night before or at 2am on flight day. Seats sell out days ahead in peak weeks, so April is the one spring month where flight booking deserves the same urgency as teahouse booking. Weather performance is decent, with afternoon wind the main cause of cancelled late rotations; morning seats are the reliable ones.
