Everest Base Camp Trek in May

The trail is dry, warm and comparatively relaxed. April’s trekking wave recedes noticeably after the first week, while expedition Base Camp remains fully inhabited, waiting on summit weather windows. Dining-room talk in Lobuche and Gorak Shep revolves around forecasts for the top, and on clear pre-dawn mornings from Kala Patthar you can sometimes pick out headlamp strings high on the mountain, the season’s quietest spectacle.

Lower down, spring turns lush. The rhododendron bloom climbs to its final elevations, villages plant potatoes and buckwheat, and the forests hold their green through the growing haze. It is a gentler, more local-feeling Khumbu than the international bustle of April.

Comfortable. Beds that needed booking in April return to walk-in availability within the first half of May, though Gorak Shep stays busy while Base Camp remains occupied. By late May, lodges begin their pre-monsoon wind-down and some houses start seasonal maintenance. No booking stress, full menus, easy pace.

Flights typically continue from Ramechhap through May while volume lasts, though cancellation risk climbs with the advancing pre-monsoon: building afternoon cloud shortens the flying day, and late-May mornings can lose rotations to valley cloud at Lukla. Two buffer days become the honest recommendation by the second half of the month. Helicopter fallback remains available and busiest in this season.
