Manaslu Circuit Trek in January

Machha Khola up through Jagat and Deng is dry, cold, and genuinely pleasant walking. The exposed ledges above the river, which turn slick and nerve-wracking once the monsoon arrives, are just a plain path in January.

Villages thin out fast above Namrung and the cold takes over. Lho's monastery, facing Manaslu's north face across the valley, gets some of its clearest views of the year, and Samagaon's teahouses run half-staffed with almost no other trekkers around.

Dharamsala is where a January trip can stall. Snow piles up on the approach and on the ridge above it through midwinter, and one heavy fall can shut Larkya La for the better part of a week. Build a spare day into the schedule at Samagaon or Samdo rather than betting on a fixed crossing date.

This trail is close to deserted in January. Jagat through Namrung keep a reduced service running, and Samagaon's lodges rarely see more than one other group in the dining room. Above Samdo the picture changes fast: Dharamsala's two guesthouses sometimes close outright for stretches of deep winter, so confirm a bed there with your agency before leaving Samagaon rather than assuming one is waiting.

Reaching the trailhead is the one part of January that carries no complication. The jeep between Kathmandu and Machha Khola runs on roads at their driest all year, free of the damage that slows the same drive come summer, and the return from Dharapani is just as simple. Everything hard about this trek in January happens above 4,000m.
