Manaslu Circuit Trek in December

The gorge and mid-valley hit their winter peak: dry, frozen, quiet, and clear enough that Manaslu's north face from Lho holds its detail all day instead of just at sunrise.

Standard winter gear and a settled forecast are usually enough to cross in the first two weeks. Past the twentieth or so, snow builds fast on the approach and the calculation starts looking a lot like January's.

Short daylight makes the late-month problem worse. An 8 to 10 hour crossing that is comfortable in October gets genuinely tight in late December, when usable light disappears by mid-afternoon and the long drop to Bimtang has to wrap up before dark.

Numbers keep falling as the month goes on. Below Samagaon, lodges stay open on a reduced staff with few other guests around. Past Samdo, closures start showing up: Dharamsala's two guesthouses thin out through December and can shut for the season entirely in the final weeks, one more reason to favour an early date over a late one.

This is the year's easiest approach. No monsoon damage anywhere on the road, jeep transport between Kathmandu and Machha Khola simple to arrange, and a quiet trailhead throughout. Reaching this trek in December presents zero difficulty; everything hard happens above Dharamsala.
