Trail conditions in December
The lower half of the route is excellent in December. Cold clear mornings, dry stone, no crowds on the Ulleri staircase, and a Poon Hill sunrise shared with a handful of people rather than a hundred. The forest is bare, which opens sightlines that the spring canopy hides completely.
Above Chhomrong the month divides. Walk in the first two weeks and you will usually find bare trail with ice in the shaded sections and a straightforward approach to base camp. Walk after the 20th and you should plan for snow underfoot from Deurali upward, a slower final day, and the beginnings of the avalanche caution that governs midwinter.
Short days change the itinerary more than people expect. Sunrise after 6:45am and full dark by 5:30pm means the long day from Chhomrong to Himalaya wants an early start rather than a leisurely breakfast.
