Annapurna Base Camp, the year at a glance

February holds the deepest snow of the year inside the Annapurna Sanctuary, because three months of winter fall have accumulated with nothing yet melting it. Skies stay excellent and the trail stays quiet. Down at Ghorepani the rhododendron buds begin to swell in the last week, which is the first sign the season is turning.

February is a degree or two warmer than January at every altitude and carries more snow on the ground, which sounds contradictory until you remember that snowpack is cumulative. Storms arrive slightly more often than midwinter, usually as a short western disturbance that dumps overnight and clears into a flawless morning. The afternoon sun has real strength by mid-month, so south-facing sections below Chhomrong melt out fast while the shaded gorge above Bamboo stays frozen.

On the trail

Trail conditions in February

The lower route improves week by week. Long afternoons mean you reach Ghorepani with light to spare, and the forest between Ghorepani and Tadhapani, which is a slog of wet leaves in the monsoon, is dry and firm in February. Watch for the buds. In the last ten days of the month the rhododendron canopy above Ulleri starts showing colour at the lowest elevations, a full month before anyone comes here to see it.

Above Chhomrong, February asks the same questions January does and asks them a little louder. The snowpack in the upper gorge is at its annual maximum, the track between Machhapuchhre Base Camp and base camp is often knee-deep on either side of a narrow boot line, and the avalanche corridor below Deurali remains the section that determines whether a given week works. Groups that build a contingency day walk in comfortably. Groups on a fixed 13 days sometimes do not.

Crowds & teahouses

Who else is up there

Numbers creep up from January without approaching spring volume. You will share a dining room with a handful of other trekkers most nights and occasionally have one to yourself above Deurali. Every lodge on the route operates, and by the final week owners at Bamboo and Himalaya are restocking and reopening the rooms they closed for midwinter, which is a reliable sign that March is close.

Getting in & out

Flights, roads and logistics

Road access stays straightforward. February is still dry season on the Prithvi Highway and the Pokhara to trailhead road, so the drive is predictable. This is the last month before spring demand starts filling Pokhara hotels, and booking a week ahead is still plenty.

Permits close. Weather windows narrow. The best Everest region teahouse beds fill by October, and spring season opens again in March. Our Kathmandu team is already booking for autumn. If you have been planning a trek, this is the window.
