Annapurna Base Camp Trek in June

The ground changes completely. Stone staircases that are merely tiring in April become genuinely slippery, and the descent below Chhomrong wants care rather than pace. Mud accumulates through the forest sections and the Modi Khola runs loud and brown.

Leeches are the defining June experience below about 3,000m. They come off the wet leaf litter onto boots and socks in numbers, and on a rainy day between Bamboo and Himalaya you will stop repeatedly to pull them off. They are harmless and they are relentless, and no amount of preparation makes them absent.

Above Deurali the leeches stop and the cloud starts. Most June trekkers reach base camp, stand in white, and see nothing. Some get a clear dawn on the second or third morning, which is the whole gamble of a monsoon trek here.

The route empties out. Most lodges stay open, particularly through the lower villages that have year-round trade, but some of the smaller houses between Bamboo and Deurali close for the season or run on a skeleton family basis. Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp usually keep at least one lodge running.

You will have the Sanctuary essentially to yourself, and the lodge owner will have time to talk. Whether that compensates for standing in cloud at 4,130m is a personal question, and for most people the honest answer is no.

This is where the Annapurna Base Camp trek beats every Everest route in the monsoon. There is no flight to cancel. The road can suffer landslide delays on the Kathmandu to Pokhara highway after heavy rain, which is a matter of hours rather than days, and the drive to the trailhead occasionally needs a detour. You will get there.
