Trail conditions in August
Conditions on the ground carry over from July: wet stone, a loud river beside the trail, and a green, overgrown feel to the lower Hinku that peaks this month as the pastures reach full growth. The grazing meadows above Kothe, empty of trekkers, are at their most heavily grazed of the year in August, yak herds pushed as high as the pasture allows before families walk them back down ahead of autumn.
The glacier above Base Camp keeps its wet, soft August character through most of the month, crevasse bridges demanding the same caution as July and climbing Sherpas holding early turnaround times on any attempted summit push. By the final week, though, firmer, drier conditions occasionally arrive alongside the first breaks in the cloud, a preview of what September will deliver in earnest. One specific August detail: the climbing Sherpa’s rope and hardware cache near Base Camp gets a full inventory this month, worn slings and dulled ice screws swapped out before the September rush, routine gear maintenance that has nothing to do with any one client’s climb.
