Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek in August

Conditions match July. Slick stone, mud in the forest, high water in every stream crossing, leeches below Ghorepani. Cumulative monsoon damage means a rerouted or repaired section somewhere between Nayapul and Ulleri is likely.

The rice terraces below Ghandruk are at their peak green in August, and the descent on the final walking day is the best it looks in the entire year. This is the specific thing an August trekker gets that an October trekker does not.

The forest between Ghorepani and Tadhapani is dense, dripping and full of birds. With the flowers long gone and the mountains hidden, the trek becomes a walk through a temperate rainforest, which is a fair description of what these hills actually are in August.

Empty for most of the month with numbers lifting slightly in the last week as autumn bookings begin. Every lodge is open and you will have your choice of rooms anywhere on the route, including Ghorepani.

The Pokhara flight stays unreliable through most of August and improves in the final week. Road conditions ease as the rain does. By the end of the month the highway is generally back to normal and Pokhara is filling ahead of the autumn season.
