Is July the worst month for the Poon Hill trek?

For mountain views, yes. July has the highest rainfall of the year and the panorama is hidden on most mornings. For green hills, waterfalls and solitude it is the strongest month of the twelve.

Are the teahouses open in July?

All of them. These are permanent working villages rather than seasonal trekking camps, so nothing on this route closes for the monsoon.

When does it rain in July on this trek?

Mostly overnight and early morning, with heavy afternoon build-up. That is why July itineraries start at first light: the clearest hours are usually between 6am and 10am.

How much does the monsoon affect the Poon Hill trek compared with high treks?

The trail itself stays open and safe, and the low altitude means nothing is closed by snow. The two real effects are the hidden views and the unreliable Kathmandu to Pokhara flight.

Twenty-two to twenty-five wet days is the July average and most of that rain falls overnight and in the early hours. That pattern is the one thing in a July trekker's favour, because a wet night often clears into a partial window between about 6am and 10am. Temperatures are mild and humid at every elevation, and Ghorepani never gets close to cold, which makes July the lightest packing month of the year here.

Wet stone throughout. The Ulleri staircase in heavy July rain is slow going down and slow going up, and the sensible pace is well below the dry-season one. Trail repairs and small reroutes after landslips are common.

Leeches are at maximum below Ghorepani. The practical approach is to check at every stop, deal with them quickly and stop thinking about it, because the alternative is a miserable four days.

The waterfalls on the climb above Tikhedhunga are running at a volume no dry-season trekker ever sees, and the forest is genuinely beautiful in a way the spring photographs do not capture. It is a different trek with a different point.

The route is close to deserted and every teahouse remains open. Ghorepani, which turns away trekkers in April, will have a dozen empty rooms in July. Service and menus are unchanged, and you will eat with the family rather than in a full dining room.

Getting in & out

Flights, roads and logistics

The Pokhara flight is at its least reliable in July and should be treated as a bonus rather than a plan. The road alternative can lose hours to landslide clearance on the Prithvi Highway after a heavy night. Anyone booking a July trek should build in a spare day at the start and accept that the drive is the likely option.
