Trip Highlights

The moments that matter most

Pashupatinath Temple is Nepal's holiest Hindu site. The cremation ghats on the Bagmati River are a window into Hindu funeral traditions. Sadhus (holy men) sit on the temple steps. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple but can observe from the river's east bank.

Boudhanath Stupa is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The massive white dome with painted eyes is surrounded by monasteries, butter lamp shops, and prayer wheel circuits. The kora (circumambulation) at sunset with monks chanting is the most atmospheric moment in Kathmandu.

Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) sits on a hilltop west of the city. The 365-step climb passes through monkey-inhabited forest to a 2,000-year-old stupa with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. On clear days, the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges are visible.

Trip Overview

A closer look

The Kathmandu Heritage Tour is a full-day guided visit to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. A private vehicle and expert guide take you to Pashupatinath Temple (Hindu cremation ghats on the Bagmati River), Boudhanath Stupa (one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world), Swayambhunath (the 2,000-year-old hilltop Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square (medieval palace complex with the living Kumari goddess).

The tour runs 6 to 8 hours depending on time spent at each site. Pashupatinath is best visited in the morning when cremation ceremonies are active. Boudhanath is atmospheric in the late afternoon when Tibetan monks circle the stupa at sunset. The guide provides historical and cultural context at each site.

All entrance fees, private vehicle, and guide are included. No special permits needed.

This tour pairs well with any trek as a pre-departure or post-trek activity. For a multi-day Nepal experience without trekking, the Himalayan Highlights Tour covers Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan in 10 days.

Day01

Pashupatinath, Boudhanath & Beyond

Kathmandu

After breakfast, take the short drive to Pashupatinath. The two-storied pagoda of Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingam (the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva). The Arya Ghat alongside Pashupatinath and on the banks of the Bagmati River is a famous Hindu funeral site. After a few hours exploring the complex, take a short drive to Boudhanath. The Buddhist shrine of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world and one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Kathmandu. The area is also famous for over 50 Tibetan gompas (monasteries) built by ancient Tibetan merchants and, more recently, by Tibetan refugees.
