Trail conditions in July
The fourth Gokyo lake begins rising in early July after months of draining, and the research paper puts the air above freezing from May to September. The Nepal Trekking Routes season guide says clouds often hide the mountains in the monsoon, so the clear views the route is sold on are a matter of luck.
The pass is the main reason to avoid this month. Our tour notes say the Cho La is risky during the monsoon, and Heaven Himalaya lists the season as generally avoided for rain, slippery trails and poor visibility. Day 11 is long, about 7 hours from Thangnak to Dzongla, and rain on loose rock and a glacier stretch is a different day from a dry one.
Lower on the route, the day 15 and 16 walks to Namche and Lukla take about 7 hours each in any month, and in July they are muddy. The Nepal Trekking Routes season guide adds landslides and leeches to the list for the monsoon months.
