Trail conditions in April
April is when this direction works as designed. You reach Dole on day 6 and Gokyo on day 8 with spring warming behind the valley, the Gokyo Ri morning on day 9 is the clear-sky bet worth making, and the pass on day 11 follows two nights at Gokyo and one at Thangnak. The Nepal Trekking Routes season guide describes spring days as warm and sunny with chilly nights near the Cho La and Gokyo Ri.
On the pass day itself the order of events is unchanged: a steep climb on loose rock, a short glacier stretch, then the descent to Dzongla at 4,800m, about 7 hours in all. Heaven Himalaya says the weather in spring is stable and the skies clearer, with snow possible at higher points. Our tour notes still recommend microspikes, and April is not the month to leave them behind.
After the pass the trail is crowded. Lobuche on day 12 and Gorak Shep on day 13 sit on the main Everest route, which our tour notes say sees hundreds of trekkers a day in peak season, while the Gokyo side sees a fraction of that. Expect to go from a quiet valley to a busy one in a single day.
