Trip Overview

Rara National Park, Nepal’s smallest and most scenic national park, established in 1976. The Park, covers an area of 106 sq. kilometers and situated about 370 kilometers north- west of Kathmandu and lies in Mugu which is a mountainous district of the western region of Nepal. More than 500 different kinds of flowers and herbs including Rhododendrons, Black Juniper, Oak, West Himalayan Spruce and Himalayan Cypress are found in this park. It is home to 20 different species of mammals and 214 species of birds.

The national park is related with Rara lake the largest lake in Nepal. Rara Lake is five kilometers long and two kilometers wide and spreads over 10.8 square kilometers. The trek to rara offers the magnificent views of the deep blue clear lake and highly forested hillside as well as the snow-capped peaks around Rara Lake. The clear, high altitude lake of Rara mirrors the snow capped Himalayas which is ringed with pine, spruce and juniper forest.

If you are looking for wilderness and solitude and do not mind the initial travel, this trek is an ideal choice. Below is a suggested 16 day itinerary. We can arrange longer itineraries from Jumla to Simikot via Rara Lake on request.

Rara Lake trek Itinerary Outline

Day 01 – Arrival at the Tribuwan International Airport in Kathmandu (1,345m). Overnight at a hotel.

Day 02 – Pre-trip meeting and sightseeing around the Kathmandu valley. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 03 – Fly to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu-1 hr flight . Overnight at a hotel.

Day 04 – Fly to Jumla (2,540m) 20 minute. Overnight at hotel.

Day 05 – Trek to Danphe Lagna (3130m). Overnight at tented camps.

Day 06 – Trek to Chautha (2770m) . Overnight at tented camps.

Day 07 – Trek to Dhotu (2400m). Overnight at tented camps.

Day 08 – Dhotu to Rara Lake (3062m) Overnight at tented camps.

Day 09 – Explore Rara Lake.

Day 10 – Trek to Gorosingha (3000m). Overnight at tented camps.

Day 11 – Trek to Sinja valley (2440m). Overnight at tented camps.

Day 12 – Trek to Jaljala Chaur (2900m). Overnight at tented camps.

Day 13 – Trek to Jumla. Overnight at hotel.

Day 14 – Fly to Nepalgunj. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 15 – Fly to kathmandu. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 16 – Transfer to the international airport for your final departure.
