Overview

The Everest View Trek is a 9-day route through the lower Khumbu that reaches a maximum altitude of 3,880 meters at the Everest View Hotel above Namche Bazaar. The trail covers the same path as the Everest Base Camp Trek as far as Tengboche Monastery, then turns back. You see Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and a dozen other Himalayan peaks without going above 3,900m or crossing any passes.

From Lukla (2,840m) the trail follows the Dudh Koshi river through Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), where you spend an acclimatization day. A side hike takes you to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 meters for a panoramic sunrise over the entire Everest massif. From Namche you continue to Khumjung village, home to the Hillary School built by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1961, before descending to Tengboche Monastery (3,860m).

Walking days average 4 to 5 hours, shorter than most Khumbu treks. The trail is well-maintained with teahouses every hour, making it accessible to beginners, families with older children, and trekkers who want Everest views without the physical demand of a base camp attempt. The difficulty is rated Easy, the only Everest region trek at this rating.

Two permits are required: Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,000) and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit (NPR 3,000). Both included in your trek cost. TIMS cards are no longer required.

If you find the lower Khumbu easy and want to push higher on a future trip, the Everest Base Camp Trek continues the same trail from Tengboche to Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar (5,545m) in 15 days. For the same route with upgraded lodges and a helicopter return, see the Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek. For a moderate alternative that visits the turquoise Gokyo Lakes instead of base camp, the Gokyo Valley Trek reaches 5,360m in 15 days.

Trip Highlights

The Everest View Trek packs the best cultural and scenic highlights of the lower Khumbu into 9 days with no extreme altitude. Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is the social hub of the region: Sherpa-run bakeries, gear shops, a weekly market, and mountain views from every rooftop. The acclimatization day here includes a hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m), one of the highest-placed hotels on Earth, where you watch sunrise light up the Everest massif over tea.

Khumjung village sits in a flat valley behind Namche with potato fields, stone walls, and the Hillary School that Sir Edmund Hillary funded in 1961. The school is still operational. Tengboche Monastery (3,860m), the largest in the Khumbu, holds daily prayer ceremonies. Its courtyard faces directly at Ama Dablam, with Everest and Lhotse visible to the north.

The return trail passes through Sagarmatha National Park's rhododendron forest, which blooms pink and red from March to May. Suspension bridges high above the Dudh Koshi river connect the valley sides. The final flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu gives you one last aerial sweep of the mountains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Everest View Trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is rated Easy and is the only Everest region trek at this difficulty level. Walking days are 4 to 5 hours on well-maintained trails with teahouses every hour. No passes, no glacier crossings, no technical terrain. Beginners, families with children over 10, and older trekkers all complete this route regularly.

How much does the Everest View Trek cost?

Our 9-day guided package starts from USD 1,075 per person. This includes Kathmandu to Lukla return flights, Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Rural Municipality permits, full board meals on the trek, teahouse accommodation, a TAAN-licensed guide, and a porter.

Can you see Everest on the Everest View Trek?

Yes. The clearest view is from the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) above Namche Bazaar, where you see the summit of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde Peak. Tengboche Monastery also offers direct views of Everest and Ama Dablam.

What is the highest point on the Everest View Trek?

The Everest View Hotel at 3,880 meters, reached on a day hike from Namche Bazaar. Your highest overnight stay is Tengboche at 3,860m. Both are well below the 5,000m+ altitudes of the Everest Base Camp Trek.

How is the Everest View Trek different from the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The Everest View Trek covers the first section of the EBC trail (Lukla to Tengboche) and turns back, taking 9 days. The Everest Base Camp Trek continues from Tengboche to Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and base camp (5,364m) over 15 days. The View Trek maxes at 3,880m; the EBC trek reaches 5,545m at Kala Patthar.

When is the best time for the Everest View Trek?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the best visibility and weather. This trek runs almost year-round (September to June) because the lower altitude means less snow and milder temperatures than higher routes.

Is altitude sickness a risk on the Everest View Trek?

Mild altitude effects are possible above 3,500m. The itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Namche (3,440m) to reduce risk. Drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily, avoid alcohol, and report headaches or nausea to your guide. Serious altitude sickness is uncommon at this altitude.

Can I extend the Everest View Trek to reach base camp?

Yes. If you feel strong at Tengboche, it is possible to continue the trail toward Dingboche and beyond, converting the trip into the full Everest Base Camp Trek. Discuss this with your guide before departure so permits and logistics are arranged in advance.

Why This Trek

Everest views without extreme altitude. Your highest sleep is 3,860m at Tengboche, well below the threshold where altitude sickness becomes common.

Walking days of 4 to 5 hours leave time to explore villages, visit monasteries, and photograph mountains without rushing.

The Everest View Hotel sunrise is one of the most famous viewpoints in Nepal. You see Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde Peak in a single panorama.

Khumjung and the Hillary School give you a window into Sherpa life that most base camp trekkers walk right past.

At USD 1,075 this is the most affordable guided trek in the Everest region, covering the same trail as the first half of the EBC route.

Is This Trek Right for You?

  • You want to see Everest but have limited time or prefer not to go above 4,000 meters. This trek maxes out at 3,880m.
  • You are a beginner trekker, a family with children over 10, or an older trekker who wants mountain scenery without extreme physical demand.
  • Walking days are 4 to 5 hours on well-maintained trails. No passes, no glaciers, no scrambling. Prior trekking experience is helpful but not required.
  • Acute Mountain Sickness is still possible above 3,500m. One acclimatization day at Namche is built in. Drink water, walk slowly, and report symptoms to your guide immediately.
  • This trek works as a standalone trip or as a warm-up before a longer Khumbu route later in the season.
