Mountaineering

The Himalaya extends over 3,800 km in a great arc welding the Indian subcontinent to Asia. Twice the height of the Alps, it’s the undisputed king of mountain ranges, containing the  world’s 86 highest peaks. The cream of the central Himalaya, nearly  one-third of the range’s total length falls in Nepal. Here rise eight of the  world’s 10 highest mountains, 8 of its 14  - 8000 meter-  plus peaks, two dozen 7,000- meter plus giants,  and perhaps 240 peaks over 6,000meters – nobody’s ever bothered  to count them all.
The fact that Nepal was officially and strictly off – limits to westerners as late as 1949, long after other Himalayan regions had become a playground for European climbers, coupled with the  fact that the country can boast of eight peaks over 8,000 meters, has resulted in the creation and  sustaining of interest both in its cultural mystery and  in its mountain.
Since,  1978 under the control of the newly formed Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA),40 mountains between 5,587m (18,330ft) and 6,654m (21,830ft) were opened to foreign climbers without the financially restricting and administratively onerous regulations governing expedition peaks. This newly created list formed the so-called ‘Trekking  peaks’ a misleading name that at one  time was to be changed perhaps ‘small’ or ‘lesser Himalayan’ is more descriptive; or perhaps ‘non-expedition’ would differentiate them from the other expedition peaks.
